If you have watched the news lately, you know that anti-Union politicians, employers and their cronies at the Department of Labor (DOL) are doing their best to provide an inferior, and potentially dangerous, alternative to our Boilermaker National Apprenticeship Program (BNAP).
Why? Because they want to boost their profits. When they cut corners on training, they put more money in their own pockets.
This proposed rule would expand the current Registered Apprenticeship Program to also include second-tier “recognized” training programs. These second-tier programs would not be as strident as our current program. In all likelihood, they would reduce pay to at or below minimum wage. These proposed programs also don’t have any significant safety provisions or equal rights protections.
It took years for us to become qualified Journeyman Boilermakers. We sacrificed to go through the training needed to become the accomplished Boilermakers we are today. And even our brothers and sisters who haven’t completed the program have the potential to be affected by this absurd rule. Whether you are a graduate Apprentice or not, this is our fight to preserve the integrity of our well-regarded training curriculum.
Right now, the DOL is accepting public comment on this proposed rule. Please stand with President Jones, the Executive Council and all other dedicated Union Brothers and Sisters in our organization by sending your members to SaveBoilermakerApprenticeships.org/#/21/ to make public comments. We only have until August 26th to submit comments and the more we get, the better chance we have of defending our Registered Apprenticeship Program.
